UPC on Borat?

When I first heard about the now-playing in-theaters-near-you movie, Borat, I was like, okay, there's one I can put on my Do Not See list. It made a small sensation in Alabama because he had duped a local etiquette expert in a ruse which culminated with a most disgusting antic.

Anyway, when I read on Collideoscope in this post that Borat had fakingly recieved the Holy Ghost at a United Pentecostal Church (UPC) campmeeting, I was floored. What? UPC on Borat?! The whole premise had an amusing oxymoronic tang. Screen caps shown on this post were proof, and I was further enlightened by an interview with Borat on the Today Show linked on the same post.

The truth is I don't really know what to make of it, but I'm deciding to throw my $0.02 in due to a little tap from ninetyandnine.com's almighty editor. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought about a satirical response that birthed itself out of the innerworkings of my sometimes cynical mind.

Picture a quintessential hicktown preacher who incessantly harps on "goin' to the pit." This is an excerpt from his Sunday night sermon after finding out about the UPC bit in the movie:

Now, I done heard about some devilish thing they're showing in the moviehouses of the world called BO-rat. And I know you probably know he's done cut the monkey and blasphemed the Holy Ghost by his pretendin' and carryin' on at a campmeetin' of our'n. And now this is being broadcast all over the world! At first, I was mad as a hornet. How dare this sinner boy mock the Most High, I thought! But then I thought, naw, Lord, I see, I see why You done this. The Lord works in mysterious ways. Ya see, some of our very own wanted to be able to be seen on hellivision, and this is the Lord's way of punishin'! God said, 'Oh, you want to be on the one-eyed devil, do you? Well, I'm gonna do that an' more—I'll plaster you all over the world bein' made to look like fools! Not on ol' devilvision, but through the very mother of all things evil herself—Hollywood!'

The idea was hilarious to me. That someone would laud Borat's poking fun at A/Ps as punishment from God. Anyway . . .

How I really feel about it, I dunno. I guess I sort of second the feelings of Scott Phillps in his exclusive mid-week article. Speaking in tongues and Pentecostal-esque worship being made fun of is nothing new. It happened on the Day of Pentecost, the mother of all Pentecostal experience, for crying out loud.

But it's kind of weird . . . I also felt some kinship with Stu Kent of House Calls in his post about the Blues Brothers. I when I was a child, got my first knowledge of Pentecostal-y stuff from TV. For whatever reason (during our B.C. days) I was watching Cape Fear with my folks. Not the 1960s, Robert Mitchum, black and white one, but the early 1990s Robert DeNiro remake. Though it was a minor part, all I remember is Robert DeNiro speaking in tongues while he was drowning in the end. Not the most savory of images, I know, lol, but . . . perhaps this is the point of all of this: Even though the image of a really sinister guy speaking in tongues while drowning is less than ideal, it introduced my nine year old mind to the idea of speaking in tongues, it made me curious about it, I asked questions about it, and in the end, it wasn't something alien when the Pentecostal experience became more important in my family's life.

Maybe the whole Borat deal, as crude, offensive, and unrelentingly satirical as it seems to be (from reviews that I've read), might be someone else's Cape Fear. Though "getting the Holy Ghost" (among many other things) is being made light of in this film, perhaps to someone out there, Borat will spark a light of curiosity that may lead to a life-changing experience. Who knows? God has a crazy way of turning things around in His favor.

Controversial things always makes my liberal side come out. My pastor asked us not to watch the movie not just because of the mockery of our religious belief but because of the crude humor and nudity that is in the movie. I respect his authority and will not view it. However, something inside of me agrees that this isn't a horrible thing, but a way to introduce our worship to someone. Although it may not be the most orthodox way, God never was ver streamlined now was he?

I watched the movie myself, and was so scared that this character, "Borat" would do something ridiculous, like pull down his pants, or squeeze a UPC member's breast or something, but thankfully, he did not.
I'm glad they showed a Pentecostal church in the movie! I felt a moving of...something...as an ex-Pentecostal member myself, so anyway, I don't really see any harm done. Maybe he DID blaspheme the Holy Ghost-that's on him and not for us to judge, but in all, I feel as though he behaved and was very respectful!

Im amazed and perplexed. How in Gods name did this guy wrest the microphone from a One God apostolic preacher?Thats something I havent seen in thirty years in the faith.

How much $$ does this preacher make? What about the gentleman who stated "I didnt' come from no damn monkey", (thats close to what he said)? Borat exposes the ridicuous nature of our culture and politics in many scenes. I thought the main mockery in this scene stems from the fact that a politician was present for this display of religious lunacy! There is no doubt, NONE, that every one of those goofballs jumping up and down is faking. I would bet every dollar I've ever made that a lie detector would root out at least half those people. The other half are so brainwashed they believe what they do is genuine. THINK FOR YOURSELVES!!

I have not seen the movie yet but I am planning to see it for myself. All I want to say is that the Holy Ghost is real and the ones who fake it will have to give a count for it. In my opinion, the movie sounds like it could touch people in a positive way also because everyone needs to learn that we can not mock or play with God and we need to see that everyone that comes to church do not always come for the right reason. The movie could also touch some of the Pentecostals to see that they can not judge a person and tell them that they have the Holy Ghost just because they sound like they are speaking in tongues, although tongues is a sign. But they need to let that person say whether or not he or she has the Holy Ghost. I believe God allowed this movie to come out for a reason although it is wrong for a person to play with the Holy Ghost. I am ready to see it.

I have only seen the extracts and online videos/comments etc. but having prayed for seekers in similar altar calls and also having been prayed for by those of several different denominations I have my own take on it. My comment comes from the personal experience of being taught to speak in tongues and told it was 'it' (it wasn't and I was very scared of offending God when I stopped gabbling but kept seeking something real) and that of another young man I met who since left who not only made it up but also thought everyone else made it up too - I suspect Borat's ability to fake a genuine holy spirit experience and the inability of those assisting him to discern it was fake is more of a problem than many would dare to admit

The Holy Ghost is very real and Gods word says the evidence of it is speaking in other tongues. You cannot teach someone to speak in tongues because speaking in tongues is a gift from God that is essential to salvation. Sometimes it's a Heavenly language, one that may not be known to man, and other times it's simply a language the person does not know how to speak, but God gives him the utterance. I have heard of cases in which a foreigner was attending service & someone else began to speak in tongues during service & the foreigner understood every word. Those are genuine experiences that cannot be explained to someone who is cynical. But speaking in tongues can be faked and only God can judge those who fake. The only way a a man may know someone is faking is if God reveals it to him. Worship is something people do to give God glory and bless Him and edify Him. The Bible says to worship Him in spirit and truth. (in the Holy Ghost and with dancing, singing, playing instruments) Worship, as described in the Bible, is amazing to witness and which to take part. I won't watch this movie because Borat is mocking God, but hopefully God will use his mockery to bring people to Him.

I just watched the movie, and then did a search to see if there were any responses from UPC regarding Borat. Thankfully, there was!

My thought when watching this was how stupid it made UPC look in so many levels. I watched that portion over and over trying to examine the whole situation ... and mainly the people. In all honesty, I eye-witnessed many Christians who simply need to grow up in God. There are many UPC'ers who have their head in the clouds because they have not discovered God for themselves, but are just in it because this is the religion they were raised in.

My feelings are that God can take the worst of situations and turn it around and make something positive out of it.

I am liberal in my thinking ... I guess to the normal UPC thinking, I feel we should share the good news on TV. If we were already using this great technology (TV) in the first place, everyone would have been able to tell what part of the UPC clip was good, what part was bad, what part was exaggerated, mocked, etc., etc.

God has a church within many churches. There is only one church of the living God with many religous titles slapped on them. I believe to the spiritually hungry, God can even take a Borat movie and stir curiousity in the hearts and minds of people to go check out a pentecostal church themselves ... and there they will find (I hope) a powerful experience of God's pressence.

On a final note, Mr. Borat no doubt must have felt the pressence of the Lord. I would not say he blasphemed the Holy Ghost, because you cannot blaspheme something you know nothing about. He was just trying to make an extra buck in the name of comedy. I'm sure he's thought about that service many times and I wouldn't be surprised if he visits (privately) a Pentecostal service again.

I attend a Church of Jesus Christ very close to the UPC religion penticostal or apostolic how ever you might want to put it I was very offended. I only watched the section containing the church scene. I dont blame the Pastors for not wanting their people to stay away from it. It was disgusting that he could go into some ones place of prayer and praise a Holy place and disrespect it in such an awful way.
No matter what your feelings are toward religion No One has a right to enter a Sanctuary and defile it in any way shape of form.
The Holy Ghost is so real and so powerful and only those who have truely experianced it can understand how amazing it is. I hope that he knows what he has really done that wasnt comedy that was blaspheme. I plan to spread the word of just how terrible it was so that Real Christians can pray for the poor people that have been exposed to the Garbage that movie has put out there. Our churches have a hard enough time being excepted THIS movie didnt make that any better.

well.. he faked the infilling of the holy spirit, being a pentecostal myself, i'm not worried about what he's done. I'm not worried about what other people think about my religion. I'm not ashamed. What my Youth Group has come into lately is something new, a new move of God is about to happen. I'm not going to sit around worrying about what Borat has done. I'm going to continue doing what i'm here to do, worship and praise my God, and witness to others, so they too can feel the awesomeness and completeness I feel when worshipping my God. Aside from that, this guy has.. no credibility, which any educated person can see from his actions.

thanks, josh

there was no redicule of God, or Holy Spirit, however the scene is simple reminder to us how rediculous some can be preachin in their own way, which usually involve expensive Rollex watch on their wrist, Rolls Royce parked in their garage. But then he is Jewish, and once you are exposed to humble Rabbi, humble servant of God, such shine and gliter does look silly. So does purple hair and purple leather throne......

Chantelle,

I am guessing from your article that you did not in fact see the movie...is this correct? In that case, I find it odd that you care to comment about it. Of course I have other idea about Borat and the UPC scene, but reading your article and realising you had not seen the movie struck me as revealing. Why do you not just see it?

chantell said...

Wow, I'm surprised this post is still getting comments 3 years later!

The reason I declined to see it is because, based on the reviews that I read, it is not something that would at all strike my fancy.

However, I do see the point that it would make sense to watch the movie, like it or not, in order to have a more informed opinion.

I can't believe all the people whining and crying here.

I'm Jewish. I find it funny that Christians from every denomination can send out missionaries and create organizations like Jews For Jesus in attempts undermine and belittle a group that believes in God...just because they don't believe in Trinity (ie..Jesus and the Holy Spirit)...but when the same thing happens to them...suddenly its an affront.

I'm christian and I agree with the jew! Nothing says you have To speak in tounges to be saved either, and ill get rid of my tv when the rich upc minister in the film gets rid of his caddy! There ya all go.

omg you people are nuts

Ive just been trolling round reading the absurd claims from the christians about judgement day thats supposidly happening tomorrow -_- ye sure...and just eventually followed links to here

as someone youd probably name an atheist the scene in which borat goes to this loony bin is nothing more than for comedic value everyone i know was pissin themselves at the whole thing i had no idea people like this REALLY exsisted and i have to say it makes me cringe.

before you all say some religious mumbo jumbo about god

ill do the typical "atheist" thing

prove god is real, your usual proof is just ...the bible

well every religion pretty much has their own version of sacred text so what makes the bible any more credabe than the others.

what makes harry potter any different? the bible was written by humans so was lord of the rings so why should i worship jesus and not frodo baggins??

i do hope this comment is approved so people can respond because i am interested in all your thoughts but to somebody who is logical and needs facts i see nothing more than crazy people rolling on the carpet instead of actually doing something with their lives

look forward to your responses

My, my, my. This post is STILL getting comments and I wrote this mamma jamma back in 2006!

Dearest anonymous atheist,

You will not be won over with any mumbo jumbo about God and the Bible from me, so I'll spare you.

Can't say I've personally rolled around on the carpet, but I am one of those crazy people who speak in tongues and worship God demonstratively, and I can assure you, I've done lots and lots and lots with my life, honest!

This is all I can say since using the Bible/and or the existence of God are sort of moot points in this particular exchange: Can't knock it till ya try it!
