Swine Flu: The Hypochondriac's Dream Come True

I'm not very freaked out by the swine flu. I mean, really, it's nothing new. Mad cow disease, SARS, that bird disease or whatever it was, and now this.

News organizations get on my nerves with hyping it up like it's the dawn of the apocalypse. But, uh, hello, the plain ol' regular flu has always killed thousands of folks and nobody's crying "pandemic."

But what annoys me more than anything are hypochondriacal people who deep down inside want to get the swine flu. They get an almost indecent pleasure each time they hear another confirmed case in another country and they have to wipe away the drool that slips when they turn on Fox News and see a world map with all affected countries lit up in blazing, hellfire red. They're the weirdos who think their sneezes should make local news. If they happen to be church folks, they testify like this: "Thank the Lord for healin' me cause I've been kinder sick, and I'm still feelin' a little under the weather and I hope it ain't the swine flu cause it's been killin' folks in Mexico and I hope I don't spread my germs to any of y'all. Praise the Lord."

So annoying.

your synicism reeks - some people ARE sickly & nursing a nagging cough with intermittent episodes of chill, may not be the dreaded pandamonium disease but may reveal something else that's laying "dormant"... i've seen it happen too much in my lifetime - you should be a little kinder in some of your post -

I plead guilty to all charges of cynicism.

However, surely you must know that I'm not making fun of people who are actually sick. I'm making fun of people who are hypochondriacs (i.e. not actually sick) and use things like swine flu break-outs to get themselves worked up. Oh, and people who are supposedly thanking God for healing but are actually relaying unfounded fears that they have the swine flu.

*rolls eyes at the Anonymous post, both the content and the lack of proofreading*

Yay, Chantell! It's so incredibly true. Which is why I opt to write parodies of children's poetry in regards to swine flu. I was freaked out for a period of about one hour, and then remembered SARS. And MRSA. And bird flu. Yeah.

I just sneezed. I hope I don't have swine flu. And I hope I didn't get my germs all over ya'll just then. Praise the Lord!

Post #3 - lack of proofreading doesn't dismiss the fact that people being sick, prone to sickness are more likely to lean to thinking that they have the unlikely strain of the flu - but nevertheless when it hits closer to home like community and/or church members the tarb in us (that's brat spelled backwards)usually realize we were being insensitive...

Now, now, "anonymous," *coughmomcough* No one's being insensitive.

Like I said, this post is just poking fun at people who take advantages of things like the swine flu to get attention and get worked up, not at people who are really at risk.

Love you, lady. ;-)

And those types of testimoanies are precisely the reason that our pastor doesn't have open testimony services often. He feels that if they want to "moan" they will do so but not at the expense of a worship service.

"Testimoanies"! That will get added to my list of great words. LOL.

Good grief. If testimonies are being "censored" due to the slight possibility of it being from a hypochondriac...that is quite extreme. People who are often healthy have no understanding of those who are chronically ill, either.

Rachel,

You are taking this stuff out of context. No one said anything about censoring testimonies. I think Theresa was saying that her pastor doesn't often allow free access to the mic because people often take advantage of it.

The purpose of testimony is for the edification of the Body, to acknowledge God and to give HIM glory, not as as a complaining session to give glory to the devil for all the ways he's dragged you down.

I feel for people who are chronically ill. You're probably right that I don't understand that mentality because God has blessed me with good health, and for that I am grateful. But a post poking fun at people who are wigging out over the swine flu is not an attack on those who actually do have health problems.

Well I'm giving you a hardy AMEN! Bother me with news a bit more significant than some 100 people out of 250 Million+ getting the flu!

Well Chantelle, your post was definitely not glowing with the love of the Lord. Who cares if people are hypochondriac? I have also never met anyone who wants to be deathly ill. If this continues to be a problem within your sphere of influence, perhaps you should consider associating with different people.

Rachel,

I am puzzled by your defensive tone. I'm sorry that you feel my post isn't glowing with the love of the Lord. I don't think disassociating myself from people due to a few annoying tendencies would be very Christian-like, though. The Bible says we should be longsuffering.

As I've repeated several times, this was not meant to be taken seriously at all. It was meant purely in fun and in humor. Some people thought it was funny, and apparently others didn't. I'm sorry if I offended you.
