1. The bread has to be soft white bread. Stale bread or wheat bread . . . boo! (Sidenote: I have nothing against wheat bread in and of itself, in fact, I like wheat bread, just not for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.) 2. You have to have a lot of peanut butter. In fact, the perfectly made sandwich has a peanut butter to jelly ratio of about 3:1.
3. You have to use jam. Jam spreads so beautifully. Jelly is just chunky and gelatinous. (Sidenote: it's still called a peanut butter and jelly sandwich even though jam is used.)
4. Not only do you have to use jam, but you have to use grape jam. Any other flavor . . . it's just not right.
5. You have to lay a superthick layer of peanut butter on one slice, and a more thin layer of jam on the other slice. It won't do to try to spread the jam over the peanut butter on the same slice. (Or worse, try to spread peanut butter over the jam on the same slice.)
6. Align the slices perfectly and gently place slices together. If you squish down on it, it'll get unnecessarily gooey.
7. Cut the sandwich diagonally. It's not right if you cut it straight down the middle.
8. You must have 2% milk to accompany your sandwich. Otherwise, forget it.
Enjoy!

You are speaking my husband's language!!! He eats 2 of these a day!
hmmm. some of these tricks, such as the diagonal cutting, i have not done. perhaps that might enhance my sandwich experience. thank goodness you outlined all these steps, though. it's always nice to have the direction of an expert ;)
three things ... you dang liberals never get anything right.
;)
i hate grape jelly. i eat my mother's homemade strawberry jam. or blackberry. but not grape, and not jelly. freezer jam only.
i agree with you about white bread, and i agree with you about quantity of peanut butter, but i require a generous portion of jelly, as well.
and i drink skim milk, not 2%.
Re: Jelly vs. Jam
One thing about conservatives that I don't get is that they tend to overlook where they and the dang liberals have common ground.
Examine my step #3. I am totally there with you on the inferiority of jelly. Jam, indeed, is the only way to go if you want to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich of perfection. What we disagree on is the flavor. I am appalled that someone like you who values tradition would eschew grape for as radical a flavor as strawberry or blackberry. Grape is the tried and true American standard of the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. To suggest otherwise is un-American and borders on Communism. I admit to being a liberal, but even I wouldn't go that far.
Praying for you, brother. :-)
I hope you don't mind if this conservative weighs in on the do and don'ts of proper peanut butter and jelly sandwich construction. Now, for me, personally, I prefer wheat bread. I mean, I can't be buying a loaf of white bread for the occasional times that I might want a pb&j. And I prefer chunky peanut butter. I like the crunch of the nuts! *grin* AND I just have to have grape jelly. Jam is just to gloppy for me or sumthin' like that. ANDDDD this is one of the few times that I drink milk! I love a tall, cold glass of 2% with my pb&j! Oh, I am definitely with you on the grape thing, Chantelle. It HAS to be grape whether it is jam or jelly. My husband has the nerve to eat strawberry and even sometimes RASPBERRY perserves with his peanut butter. Egads! *smile* Oh, and I always eat my sandwich whole for some reason. No cutting it in half whether diagonally or straight across.
